Class 2 English Grammar – Complete Textbook Guide

English grammar is the set of rules we follow to use words and sentences correctly. In Class 2, students learn the basics of grammar, including nouns, verbs, adjectives, sentences, and punctuation.

Learning grammar at this level helps children read, write, and speak English properly.

1. The Sentence

A sentence is a group of words that makes complete sense. It can tell something, ask a question, or show excitement.

Examples:

  • I like apples.
  • The cat is sleeping.
  • Wow! What a pretty flower!

Rules:

  1. Every sentence starts with a capital letter.
  2. Every sentence ends with a punctuation mark: . ? !
  3. A sentence must have a subject and a verb.

2. Subject and Predicate

Every sentence has two parts:

Subject

The person or thing the sentence is about.

Example:
The dog is barking.
Subject: The dog

Predicate

Tells what the subject does or is.

Example:
The dog is barking loudly.
Predicate: is barking loudly


3. Kinds of Sentences

There are three main types of sentences in Class 2:

  1. Statement (Declarative) – Tells something
    Example: I love my school.
  2. Question (Interrogative) – Asks something
    Example: What is your name?
  3. Exclamation (Exclamatory) – Shows strong feeling
    Example: Hurray! We are going to the park!

(Imperative sentences can be introduced later in Class 3.)


4. Noun

A noun is the name of a person, place, animal, or thing.

Examples:

  • Person: mother, Raju, teacher
  • Place: school, park, river
  • Animal: dog, cat, elephant
  • Thing: book, pen, bag

Example Sentences:

  • My mother is cooking.
  • The dog is running.
  • I like my school.

5. Kinds of Noun

Proper Noun

The special name of a person, place, or thing. Always starts with a capital letter.

Examples: Riya, Delhi, Monday

Common Noun

The general name of a person, place, or thing.

Examples: girl, city, dog


6. Singular and Plural

  • Singular: One person, animal, or thing
    Examples: cat, book, boy
  • Plural: More than one
    Examples: cats, books, boys

Rules:

  1. Add –s: pen → pens
  2. Add –es: bus → buses

7. Gender

Gender tells if a noun is male or female.

Masculine

boy, father, king

Feminine

girl, mother, queen

Common Gender

teacher, doctor, friend


8. Pronoun

A pronoun replaces a noun so we don’t repeat it.

Examples:

  • Riya is my friend. She is kind.
  • The dog is sleeping. It is tired.

Common Pronouns: I, you, he, she, it, we, they


9. Verb

A verb shows action or being.

Action Verbs

run, eat, play, jump, read
Example: I run fast.

Being Verbs

is, am, are
Example: She is happy.


10. Adjective

An adjective describes a noun.

Examples: big, small, red, happy

Example Sentences:

  • The red ball is mine.
  • She has a small bag.

11. Articles (A, An, The)

  • A → Before consonant sounds: a dog, a pen
  • An → Before vowel sounds: an apple, an egg
  • The → Specific noun: the sun, the teacher

12. Prepositions

A preposition shows position or place.

Examples: in, on, under, behind, near

Example Sentences:

  • The cat is on the table.
  • The ball is under the chair.

13. Conjunctions

A conjunction joins words or sentences.

Examples: and, but, or

Example Sentences:

  • I like apples and bananas.
  • She is small but strong.

14. Punctuation

Punctuation marks make sentences clear and easy to read.

  • Full Stop (.) – I like ice cream.
  • Comma (,) – I bought apples, bananas, and oranges.
  • Question Mark (?) – Where is your bag?
  • Exclamation Mark (!) – Wow! What a beautiful flower!

15. Capital Letters

Use capital letters for:

  1. The first word of a sentence
  2. Names of people
  3. Names of cities and countries
  4. Days and months

Example: My friend Riya lives in Delhi. Today is Monday.


16. Opposites and Synonyms

Opposites (Antonyms)

Big ↔ Small
Hot ↔ Cold
Fast ↔ Slow

Synonyms

Happy ↔ Joyful
Small ↔ Tiny
Big ↔ Large


17. Simple Paragraph Writing

A paragraph is a group of sentences about one topic.

Example Paragraph

My Pet Cat
I have a pet cat. Its name is Mimi. It is white and small. Mimi likes to play with a ball. I love my cat very much.
