TCS NQT Part A – Mock Test Solutions

Section 1: Numerical Ability

  1. Numbers in ratio 5:7, LCM = 420
    • Let numbers = 5x and 7x
    • LCM = 35x = 420 → x = 12
    • Numbers = 5×12 = 60, 7×12 = 84
      Answer: 60, 84
  2. Boat problem:
    • Downstream speed = 30/3 = 10 km/h
    • Upstream speed = 30/5 = 6 km/h
    • Boat speed = (10+6)/2 = 8 km/h
    • Stream speed = (10–6)/2 = 2 km/h
      Answer: Boat = 8 km/h, Stream = 2 km/h
  3. Average of 10 numbers = 28, remove 34 & 42
    • Total = 10×28=280
    • Remove 34+42=76 → remaining = 280–76=204
    • Average = 204/8 = 25.5
      Answer: 25.5
  4. Simple Interest problem:
    • SI for 2 yrs = 12,100 – P = 12,100 – P? Wait careful. Usually SI = amount – principal
    • Let principal = P
    • P + 2PR/100 = 12,100 → SI = 12,100 – P = 2PR/100
    • Similarly, after 3 yrs → P + 3PR/100 = 13,310 → SI = 3PR/100
    • Difference = 13,310–12,100 = 1,210 = 1PR/100 → P*R/100 = 1,210
    • 2PR/100 = 2*1,210 = 2,420 → P + 2,420 = 12,100 → P = 9,680
    • R = (P*R/100)/P = 1,210/9,680 ×100 ≈ 12.5%
      Answer: Principal = ₹9,680, Rate = 12.5%
  5. Three taps problem:
    • Tap 1: 1/20 per min, Tap2: 1/30 per min, Tap3 empties: 1/40 per min
    • Net rate = 1/20 + 1/30 – 1/40 = (6+4–3)/120=7/120
    • Time = 1 ÷ 7/120 = 120/7 ≈ 17.14 min
      Answer: 17 1/7 min (~17.14 min)
  6. A,B,C work problem:
    • A=1/12, B=1/15, C=1/20 per day
    • Together 4 days: work = 4*(1/12+1/15+1/20) = 4*(5+4+3)/60 = 4*12/60 = 48/60=4/5
    • Remaining = 1–4/5=1/5
    • B+C rate = 1/15 + 1/20 = 7/60 per day
    • Days = (1/5)/(7/60) = (1/5)*(60/7)=12/7≈1.71 days
      Answer: 1.71 days (~1 day 17 hours)
  7. Population problem:
    • Population after 2 years = 24,200*(1.1)^2 = 24,200*1.21 ≈ 29,282
      Answer: 29,282
  8. Number series 7,14,28,56,112 → ?
    • Multiply by 2 → 112*2=224
      Answer: 224

    • Red: C(3,2)=3, Blue: C(4,2)=6, Green: C(5,2)=10
    • Total = C(12,2)=66
    • Probability = (3+6+10)/66=19/66
      Answer: 19/66
  10. Solve 3x–7=2x+5 → x=12
  11. Compound interest:
  • A=P(1+r/100)^n → 10,000*(1+0.08)^2=10,000*1.1664=11,664
  • CI = 11,664–10,000=1,664
    Answer: 1,664
  1. Sum problem:
  • x + y = 50, 2x = y +10 → y = 2x–10
  • x + 2x–10 = 50 → 3x=60 → x=20, y=30
    Answer: 20, 30
  1. Train 120m + platform 180m in 15s → speed
  • Total distance=120+180=300m=0.3km, time=15s=15/3600 h=1/240 h
  • Speed=0.3/(1/240)=72 km/h
    Answer: 72 km/h
  1. Simplify: (144 ÷12 ×3)+18 ÷6 = (12×3)+3=36+3=39
  2. LCM of 24,36,60 → LCM=360

  8. Train speed difference: 60/3=20 km/h, 60/2.5=24 km/h → 4 km/h faster
  9. 20% of x=50 → x=250
  10. CI=8000(1+0.1)^2–8000=8800–8000=880* Wait careful: 80001.1=8800; next year 88001.1=9680 → CI=9680–8000=1680
  11. x–2/5 x=180 → 3/5 x=180 → x=300
