Difference Between Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells

Cells are the basic building blocks of all living organisms, but not all cells are the same. They can be broadly classified into prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Understanding the differences between them is fundamental to biology.

1. Nucleus

  • Prokaryotic Cells: Lack a true nucleus. Their genetic material (DNA) floats freely in the cytoplasm in a region called the nucleoid.
  • Eukaryotic Cells: Have a well-defined, membrane-bound nucleus that contains the cell’s DNA.

2. Cell Size

  • Prokaryotic Cells: Generally smaller, usually between 0.1–5 micrometers.
  • Eukaryotic Cells: Larger in size, typically 10–100 micrometers.

3. Organelles

  • Prokaryotic Cells: Do not have membrane-bound organelles. Structures like ribosomes exist but are smaller and simpler.
  • Eukaryotic Cells: Contain membrane-bound organelles such as mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, and lysosomes, which perform specialized functions.

4. Cell Structure

  • Prokaryotic Cells: Mostly unicellular (single-celled organisms), such as bacteria and archaea.
  • Eukaryotic Cells: Can be unicellular or multicellular, including plants, animals, fungi, and protists.

5. Cell Division

  • Prokaryotic Cells: Reproduce asexually through a process called binary fission.
  • Eukaryotic Cells: Reproduce via mitosis (asexual) and meiosis (sexual reproduction).

6. DNA Structure

  • Prokaryotic Cells: DNA is circular and not associated with histone proteins.
  • Eukaryotic Cells: DNA is linear and wrapped around histone proteins, forming chromosomes.
