LKG English Grammar – Complete Guide

English grammar helps young children learn letters, words, and simple sentences. In LKG, children start learning the alphabet, basic words, colors, numbers, and simple sentences. This builds a strong foundation for speaking, reading, and writing English.

1. The Alphabet (A–Z)

Children learn 26 letters of English.

Example:

  • A, B, C, D … Z

Activity: Trace letters with fingers or crayons. Say the sounds aloud.


2. Vowels and Consonants

  • Vowels: a, e, i, o, u
  • Consonants: All other letters (b, c, d, f …)

Examples:

  • Vowels Words: apple, egg, ice, orange, umbrella
  • Consonant Words: bat, cat, dog, fish

3. Simple Words

Children learn to read, recognize, and write simple words.

Examples:

  • cat, dog, sun, pen, ball, hat, cup

Activity: Match words with pictures for fun learning.


4. Colors

Children learn basic colors in English.

Examples:

  • Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, Black, White

Activity: Point to objects of the same color.


5. Numbers (1–20)

Children learn numbers 1 to 20 and how to write them.

Example: 1, 2, 3, … 20

Activity: Count objects around the classroom or home.


6. Noun (Person, Animal, Thing)

A noun is the name of a person, animal, or thing.

Examples:

  • Person: mom, dad, Ria
  • Animal: cat, dog, cow
  • Thing: ball, pen, book

Example Sentences:

  • The cat is sleeping.
  • Mom is cooking.

7. Verb (Action Words)

A verb tells what someone or something does.

Examples:

run, jump, eat, play, sleep

  • She plays with a ball.

8. Simple Adjectives (Describing Words)

Adjectives tell more about a noun.

Examples:

big, small, hot, cold, happy, sad

9. Opposites (Antonyms)

Opposites help children understand contrasting words.

Examples:

  • Big ↔ Small

10. Simple Sentences

Children practice making very short sentences using nouns, verbs, and adjectives.

11. Articles (A, An)

  • A → Before consonant sounds: a cat, a pen
  • An → Before vowel sounds: an apple, an egg

Example Sentences:

12. Punctuation

Punctuation makes sentences clear and readable.

  • Full Stop (.) → I like apples.
  • Question Mark (?) → What is this?
  • Exclamation Mark (!) → Wow! What a big balloon!

13. Capital Letters

Use capital letters for:

  1. The first word in a sentence
  2. Names of people

Example: Mom is cooking. Ria is my friend.
