PASSAGE 2 – THE SECRET GARDEN

Maya loved visiting her grandmother’s house during the holidays. Behind the house was a small garden that had once been beautiful. However, it had been neglected for many years. The flower beds were covered with weeds, the paths were filled with dry leaves, and the old fountain no longer worked.

One morning, Maya decided to bring the garden back to life. She removed the weeds and collected the dry leaves. Her grandmother helped her plant roses, marigolds and sunflowers. Maya’s brother repaired the broken fountain. 

For several weeks, the family worked together. They watered the plants, cleaned the paths and painted the old garden gate. Slowly, the garden changed. Colourful flowers began to bloom, butterflies danced around the plants, and birds returned to the trees.

Maya was delighted. She realised that even a neglected place could become beautiful if people cared for it patiently.

PASSAGE 3 – WHY DO WE NEED TREES?

Trees are among the most useful living things on Earth. They give us oxygen, fruits, wood, medicines and shade. They also provide homes for many birds, insects and animals.

Trees help keep the air clean by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. Their roots hold the soil together and help prevent soil erosion. In cities, trees provide shade and can make the surroundings cooler.

Forests are also important because they are home to thousands of different plants and animals. Unfortunately, many forests are being cut down to build roads, houses and factories. This process is called deforestation.

We can all help protect trees. We should avoid wasting paper, plant more trees and never damage young plants. Schools and communities can organise tree-planting drives. Taking care of trees today will help make our planet healthier for future generations.

PASSAGE 4 – THE LOST KITTEN

On her way home from school, Riya heard a faint cry coming from behind a bush. She looked carefully and found a tiny kitten hiding among the leaves. It looked frightened and hungry.
