(a) Animals are useful to people in many ways. Cows provide milk, sheep provide wool, and bullocks may help farmers in agricultural work.

(b) Kutcha house: usually made from mud, straw, bamboo etc.; generally less strong; commonly found in villages or temporary settlements.
Pucca house: made from bricks, cement, iron etc.; stronger and more durable; generally lasts longer.

(c) Water is collected from sources such as rivers, lakes or dams. It is cleaned at a water-treatment plant and then supplied through pipes to homes.

(d) We can keep surroundings clean by:

  1. Putting waste in dustbins.
  2. Keeping drains clean and covered.
  3. Avoiding littering and separating recyclable waste.

(e) Different workers help build a house. A mason builds walls, a carpenter makes doors/windows, a plumber fits water pipes and an electrician installs electrical wiring.

(f) During growing up, a child becomes taller and heavier, body parts grow and physical abilities and mental understanding develop.

SECTION D — LONG ANSWERS

Q6(a). Journey of water:
Water may come from rivers, lakes, dams or underground sources. It is collected and taken to a water-treatment plant where impurities are removed. Clean water is then stored in tanks and supplied through pipes to homes.

OR

Rainwater harvesting:
Rainwater harvesting means collecting and storing rainwater for later use or allowing it to recharge groundwater. It helps save water, increases groundwater levels and reduces wastage of rainwater.

(b) Growth of a seed:
A seed needs water, air and suitable warmth to germinate. It first absorbs water and swells. The seed coat breaks, the root grows downward and the shoot grows upward. Leaves develop and the young plant gradually grows into a mature plant.

(c) Life in a cold region:
People generally wear woollen and warm clothes. They may eat hot and energy-rich foods. Houses are designed to keep warmth inside and may have special insulation. People may use heaters and change their daily activities according to the cold weather.

(d) Importance of forests:
Forests provide oxygen, fruits, wood, medicines and other useful products. They provide shelter and food for many animals. Forests help prevent soil erosion, maintain the water cycle and support biodiversity.

(e) No electricity for one week:
We may face difficulties in using fans, lights, refrigerators, televisions, computers and some cooking appliances. We can manage by using daylight, candles/torches safely, cooking with suitable alternative methods, keeping refrigerator doors closed and reducing unnecessary activities requiring electricity.
